Edificio de la Caja Real

This colonial building, is nowadays a cultural center of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi (UASLP).

It is locatin of San Luis Potosi downton. is from the eighteenth century was built by the then treasurer and architecture buff, Felipe Cleere, in order to raise the fifth of metals that corresponded to the king of Spain at that time.

It began its construction in 1764, after independence was a police station, customs and residence of some governors and commanders. In 1854, President Santa Anna gave this building to the Palacio Episcopal when the new bishop of San Luis Potosi was chosen. The Ilmo. Mr. Pedro Barajas lived in this building from 1855 to 1858 where also lived limos. Mr. Cande, Corona and Montes de Oca, and was occupied by the seminary. It was declared a national monument on June 8, 1935 and in 1937 opened their offices here the Federal Finance Office. Since 1960 it was occupied by units of the University and currently is the University Cultural Center.

The exterior façade of this Baroque building was made on the "arista ochavada", one of the few that were built with this unique feature of the civil architecture of New Spain. The floor plan is square and has a magnificent octagonal central courtyard. Above the main balcony is the coat of arms of the Ilmo. Mr. Montes de Oca, last bishop who lived in "La Caja Real", and in the open niche, semicircular, a beautiful tequitqui sculpture in stone, of the Immaculate, a gift from King Charles III of Spain to the city.
