Culture

The Huasteca Mexican culture is a pre-Hispanic civilization in Mesoamerica. Huastecos used to call themselves teenek (contraction of Te ' Inik, "people here" ) and spoke the language huasteco (family of the Mayan language ) , spoken in nearly 60 villages. Huastecos reached the Huasteca region between 1500 BC and 900 BC.

 

 

 

The Huasteca culture and civilization achievements reached to build cities. The main city was Tampico, which became in time a fair economic center. Usually they wore little clothing. They were admired by other Mesoamerican peoples for their musical abilities.

Around 1450, the Huastecos were defeated by the Aztecs, led by Moctezuma. Thereafter, the Huastecos paid tribute to the Aztecs, but remained largely self-government in a local level.

 

They were dominated by the Spaniards between 1519 and 1530. With the imposition of the Catholic faith. After the Spanish conquest, many huastecos were sold as slaves in the Caribbean.
